Your reference to Honest Ed Mirvish's leaving behind a "cheap-crap empire" is offensive, insensitive, false and hurtful (Hello & Goodbye - Globe T.O., Dec. 26). In my 51 years with Honest Ed's, I have never read such an insulting remark about our remarkable Honest Ed Mirvish and Honest Ed's. Shame on you.

We have never sold "cheap crap," but rather sell good merchandise at cheap prices at our world-famous landmark emporium. A plaque from Heritage Canada displayed at our front entrance recognizes our venue as "the first true bargain store in Canada."

"Cheap crap" does not describe the volume of national name-brand items we sell at bargain prices. It does not reflect the satisfaction of tens of millions of customers who have visited and purchased affordable bargains over the past 61 years and continue to do so today.

A more accurate and meaningful statement might be: Honest Ed Mirvish left an empire that continues to serve clientele with bargains at cheap prices. Honest Ed is cheap. But his bargains are a class act.
