Could we please stop using the term "committed suicide"? This antiquated and incorrect phrasing appears frequently in The Globe (My Brother's Life Journey Continues - Facts & Arguments, March 15). While suicide was once considered a crime, it has not been considered so for decades under the Criminal Code.

On that note, even when speaking of a crime, such as murder or bank robbery, it is common to say robbed a bank, not committed bank robbery.

A preferred term by suicide-prevention advocates worldwide is died by suicide.

If we want to destigmatize mental illness, we must start by using more accurate and enlightened terminology.
