Re John Manley Points To The Brakes (editorial -- Aug. 9): We certainly live in a curious world when it comes to economic policy.
The Minister of Finance, with the support of The Globe and Mail, wants to apply the brakes to new public spending because of the mounting risk of a slowdown.
Meanwhile, over at the Bank of Canada, David Dodge is putting the brakes to the economy because he thinks we are growing too fast.
With unemployment at 7.6 per cent in July, continuing stock-market turmoil and mounting fears of a double-dip U.S. recession, all this excessive caution in Ottawa could help bring us to a grinding halt.
Mr. Manley should ask Mr. Dodge to ease up and think about the new measures that may soon be needed to stimulate growth and jobs.
