Margaret Wente mentioned that we at The Linden School don't sing the national anthem - and it's true. When our founders started the school in 1993, they made a conscious decision not to ask students to sing a song that doesn't refer to our all-girls population, and that decision has held since. However, there are myriad other ways to learn and express what it means to be Canadian, and these are what we teach girls every day. Just yesterday, our students learned about the impact oil and gas development in Alberta have had on the Lubicon Cree population, and discovered how they can help make a difference by writing a letter to the Alberta government urging respect for Lubicon rights. This is one example of many ways we encourage girls to become active, involved citizens who care about Canada - and to us, that's what it really means to be Canadian.
