As predictable as Vancouver rain, Ottawa warns it will just say no to more funding for Own the Podium. As a former consultant with Sport Canada for 17 years, I recognize this predictability. The Canadian Olympic Committee should know by now that the feds put money up front to try to ensure we're not an embarrassment at Games we host and, as they end, so does any enrichment funding. It happened after 1976 (we had Game Plan) and it happened after 1988 (we had Best Ever '88).
If the feds really want to try to level the funding playing field with other sporting nations, with substantial contributions coming from corporate Canada, they should enact a tax break on donations for our athletes. If they don't do something, the vicious funding circle of "bait and switch" will sadly continue.
