Re Canada To Hold Haiti Summit Amid Historic Relief Effort (Jan. 18): One can only hope the summit invitations will reflect a human solidarity that transcends ideological and cultural differences. In this spirit, will Canada issue an open invitation that includes all of Haiti's Caribbean and Latin American neighbours? For example, Cuba already has about 400 medical personnel complete with field hospitals at work in Haiti, and is preparing to send in hundreds more medical personnel.
If the Haitian people are ever to achieve a better future, forthcoming international aid efforts must not be undertaken in the shadow of an increasingly evident de facto U.S. military occupation of Haiti.
