The donors: Nadine Segal and family

The gift: Raising $20,000

The cause: Cystic Fibrosis Canada

Days after Clara Rempel Segal was born in Toronto last October, she was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, a genetic condition that causes the lungs and digestive system to become clogged with mucus. There was no history of the condition in her family, but tests revealed that many relatives were carriers.

Clara has been doing well and the family began raising money for Cystic Fibrosis Canada. Soon they went further and decided to organize a golf tournament to raise money for the charity.

"It seemed to be something that we all like to do and that we felt we could get our friends to participate in," said Nadine Segal, who lives in Toronto and is Clara's great-aunt.

The event, named the Tillie Sheppard Memorial Golf Tournament in honour of Clara's great-grandmother, will be held on Sept. 16 at the Cardinal Golf Club in King City, Ont. The family hopes to raise $20,000 and nearly 100 golfers have signed up. They also plan to make it an annual tournament.

"I am stunned by the generosity and support that comes from one's friends," Ms. Segal said. "People just come through and it's wonderful."
