Bay Street caps weekly gain to start the year

The S&P/TSX composite index added 0.6 per cent, capping a weekly gain to start the year, as metals producers advanced on a weaker U.S. dollar after a drop in North American jobs. Teck Resources increased 3 per cent, while First Quantum Minerals added 6.2 per cent.

Wall Street rises on earnings optimism

U.S. stocks rose as speculation companies will end the longest profit slump on record and the Federal Reserve will leave interest rates near zero overshadowed an unexpected decrease in jobs. United Parcel Service rallied 4.8 per cent, while Alcoa added 2.5 per cent.
