Nancy Hughes Anthony announced Tuesday that she will be stepping down from her post as CEO of the Canadian Bankers Association next spring, once a successor is in place.
Ms. Hughes Anthony, 61, joined the industry association in early 2007, a short time before the global liquidity crunch and subsequent banking crisis sent the sector into turmoil. She had formerly been CEO of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, and her career included stints as a federal deputy minister and a senior advisor to the government of Prince Edward Island.
The CBA, which represents 51 Canadian banks, foreign bank subsidiaries and foreign bank branches, is in the early stages of recruiting a new CEO.
"My husband and I just decided now is the time," Ms. Hughes Anthony said. "I would still like very much to be involved in business in some way, potentially through consulting or board appointments."
While Ms. Anthony's time at the helm of the organization was one of the rockiest periods the banking sector has gone through, she was also undergoing treatment for breast cancer during the early part of her time at the CBA.
"It does provide a kind of wake up call, when you're considering your future," she said.
