Private placement rules -- too old?
Private placements are sold under rules that are almost 30 years old in the U.S., meaning that the net worth requirements are pretty low. Should they be increased? Are the wrong people buying the deals?
Bloomberg takes a good look. The question is germane for Canada, where the bar for accredited investor status is also relatively low, and there's no requirement to be deal savvy. This created problems in the asset-backed commercial paper mess, and the issue is still out there.
SEC fines Canadians $310-million
Two Canadians accused of overseeing a long-running ponzi scheme have been ordered to pay about $310-million in fines and disgorged profits by the Securities and Exchange Commission.
