Bank earnings lift Toronto

The Toronto market gained 1.0 per cent as earnings from two of the big Canadian banks - CIBC and National Bank - beat expectations. The financial sector gained 1.0 per cent as CIBC added 3.1 per cent and National Bank rose 2.0 per cent.

Gold glitters for TSX

Toronto's gold sector was the biggest percentage gainer, up 3.5 per cent as the April bullion contract on the New York Mercantile Exchange jumped $11.30 higher to $1,108.50 (U.S.) an ounce. Barrick Gold added 2.5 per cent and Goldcorp Inc. rose 3.7 per cent.

Worries over jobs, Greece sink Wall Street

The Dow fell 0.5 per cent as the possibility of downgrades of Greece's debt fanned worries that troubles there will spread to other countries. And an unexpected rise in first-time claims for unemployment insurance raised concerns the labour market will worsen.
