At last, the Toronto Argonauts have a quarterback and his name is Bell, Dalton not Kerwin.
The Argos acquired the 27-year-old Bell from the Saskatchewan Roughriders Tuesday in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2010 Canadian draft. The pick originally belonged to the 'Riders before they traded it to Toronto for import offensive lineman Cliff Washburn.
Bell spent all of last season on Saskatchewan's practice roster after signing with the CFL team in October of 2008. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound Texan spent time in the NFL with the Seattle Seahawks, Carolina Panthers and Green Bay Packers following his university career at West Texas A&M.
Adam Rita, the Argos' general manager, said Toronto was "fortunate to obtain the playing rights of Dalton Bell. He's a young quarterback with a bright future. He is a good candidate to come to Toronto and compete for a quarterback spot."
The Argos are also chasing former Buffalo Bills' quarterback Gibran Hamdan.
The team recently released Kerry Joseph, Cody Pickett and Stephen Reaves, its three holdover quarterbacks from last season when Toronto won just three of 18 games.
