Canada won the silver medal in both the men's and women's team events Saturday to conclude the Pan American squash championships.

The Canadian women dropped the final to the U.S., 2-0. Samantha Cornett of Ottawa lost the opening match but Stephanie Edmison of Toronto nearly pulled off a major upset stretching former world No. 1 Nathalie Grainger to five games in a 3-2 loss.

"Stephanie did a great job exploiting Nathalie's weaknesses and nearly won," said Canadian coach Yvon Provencal of Montreal.

Genevieve Lessard of Montreal was the third team member.

The Canadian men lost 2-0 to Mexico in the championship final. David Phillips of Pointe-Claire, Que., dropped the opening match to last week's individual champion Jorge Baltazar 3-1 while Shawn DeLierre of Brossard, Que., put up a strong fight against Alfredo Avilo before falling 3-1.

The result was still a big improvement on last year's fifth place finish for the Canadians which also included Robin Clarke of Toronto.

"It's never fun to lose the last match but it's mission accomplished for both teams," said Provencal. "We had hopes that guys could pull out the victory but it was better than last year for sure. The women faced a formidable opponent and we knew a win would be tough."
