With the buzz of Katy Perry and her dancing sharks from this year's Super Bowl halftime show starting to fade from our memory, it's now time to turn our attention to next year's football extravaganza.

Jason Long from Delaware, Ohio has already got the ball rolling with a petition on Change.org which calls on the NFL to "give America what it wants and needs". Long says it is time for rock legends Metallica to be the musical act for the halftime show at Super Bowl 50 in San Francisco.

"It is absolutely stupefying that these American pioneers of rock have not been involved with a Super Bowl halftime to date and it is time for that to change," reads the petition, which had garnered more than 22,000-plus signatures in just one week since it was launched.

"It's time for the sugar-pop and candy artists to step aside in favour of real American metal... We don't need pop-tarts on mechanical tigers giving us flash and no substance, we need amps and drums cranked up and played with power and emotion."

Long points out that the Grammy-winning heavy metal group has headlined every major festival around the world, from Glastonbury to Lollapalooza, sold more than 110-million records worldwide and were first ballot Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees.

"Metallica will not let you down," Long concludes in his letter to the National Football League. "I guarantee it."

A similar petition four years ago, from a different person, calling on the NFL to have Metallica play the halftime of Super Bowl 46 only garnered 10 signatures.

The NFL will likely announce the halftime performers for Super Bowl 50 sometime in November 2015.
