Justin Rose has had to relinquish his European Tour card after failing to compete in the required number of tournaments.
However, the former Tour number one and 23rd ranked golfer in the world likely won't have to wait two years before getting his card back.
"We've been discussing the situation with Justin for months and months as you can imagine. He resigned with a view to rejoining next season and then playing 12-plus counting events," European Tour COO Keith Waters tells the Press Association.
Under the European Tour rules, players need to participate in a minimum of 12 events in order to retain their playing privileges. Rose has only played in three events this year - BMW Championship, British Open and Irish Open.
"It's been hard for him to get to 12 and having played only six to this point he didn't want to play six of the next seven weeks, not least because he's had a bit of a niggling wrist injury," said Waters.
Rose's name has been removed from the Tour's "Race to Dubai" money list, making him ineligible for the season ending Dubai World Championship next month.
One of the criticisms Rose faced when he was left off the Ryder Cup team by European captain Colin Montgomerie last month was that he spent too much time on the PGA Tour and did not play enough European events.
