Jon Mills
Jon Mills shot a 4-under 66 Friday to move up the leaderboard at the Nationwide Tour stop in Jacksonville.
The Belleville, Ontario native had five birdies and a bogey is three strokes behind leader David Mathis, who shot the round of the day with a 7-under-par 63.
Craig Barlow, Kyle Reifers and Andrew Svoboda sit in second, two strokes off the pace.
Mills came into the week 31st on the money list and a win would guarantee him his PGA Tour card for next year with just one event remaining on the Nationwide schedule.
David Hearn, who started the week one spot out of the top 25, hurt his chances of moving up by shooting 73 and missing the cut by just one stroke. After playing the front nine 1-under par, the Brantford, Ontario native went bogey - double bogey to start the back nine and added another bogey on 17.
Mathis played his opening nine holes at 2-under-par. He then recorded birdies on holes 3-7 and finished with a birdie on nine for the lowest round of the tournament so far.
Mathis entered the week at No. 35 on the money list and needs to move up 10 spots by the end of next week's Nationwide Tour Championship to earn his PGA TOUR card for the 2011 season.
"I think about the money list. I look at it to see where I am, but I try not to lean on it," Mathis said. "Two weeks ago I was 40th, so I have moved up five spots. Now I need to move up 10 in the next two weeks."
This is the second time Mathis has held the second-round lead on the Nationwide Tour. He converted his other 36-hole lead into a victory at the 2008 BMW Pro-Am. The second-round leader/co-leader has gone on to win five times in 27 events this season.
