Vancouver's Haylee Johnson earned her second gold medal in as many days and three other Canadians made the podium Saturday at the U.S. Grand Prix swimming competition.
In the women's 200-metre breaststroke, Johnson built a big lead early and finished in two minutes 31.40 seconds. Lithuania's Raminta Dvariskyte was second in 2:33.03 and Romy Landeck of the U.S. was third in 2:35.56.
"It's always an exciting race to win because it is so hard emotionally and physically," said Johnson, who won Friday's 100-metre breaststroke.
"My morning swim didn't go as well (she was third in prelims), so I figured out a strategy to have more success in the final. I knew it was going well early and I just tried to hold on."
Brent Hayden of Mission, B.C., raced for the first time since the Commonwealth Games, taking bronze in the men's 50 freestyle in 22.78 seconds. Jason Lezak of the U.S., won gold in 22.57, while teammate Josh Schneider was second in 22.59.
Since the Games, Hayden has been bothered by some back issues.
"It was good enough for now," said Hayden, the 2007 world champion in the 100 freestyle. "I liked the second half of my race but my start could have been better. My back has been up and down lately and that affected me a bit tonight."
Also earning bronze medals Saturday were Vancouver's Tanya Hunks in the women's 200 butterfly and Jordan Hartney, also of Vancouver, in the men's 200 butterfly. Calgary's Thomas Jobin fourth. It was Hartney's second medal of the competition.
Meanwhile, 14-time Olympic champion Michael Phelps won the 100 backstroke in 54.14 seconds - more than a second off his personal best.
Fifteen-year-old American Missy Franklin won the women's 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke. In the backstroke, she had a personal-best of 59.75 seconds.
In other Canadian results, Vancouver's Scott Dickens was fourth in the 200 breaststroke with Sean Nugent of Burnaby, B.C., sixth. Toronto's Susan Escobar was fifth in the women's 400 freestyle, while Calgary's Chad Bobrosky and Victoria's Jeremy Bagshaw were sixth and seventh in the men's 400 freestyle.
Competition ends Sunday.
