You can probably make an argument most years for more Detroit Red Wings on the NHL's all-star teams.
This time around, however, there'll be only one Detroit player at the game in Raleigh, N.C., with 40-year-old captain Nick Lidstrom doing the honours. Missing will be Henrik Zetterberg (tied for sixth in NHL scoring), Pavel Datsyuk (16th in scoring), Brian Rafalski (ninth among defencemen) and Jimmy Howard (first in wins).
Among the league leaders, here's a look at who didn't make the cut (all-stars highlighted in yellow, rookie invitees in light blue):
For the most part, the best goalies in the game were named all-stars, with Luongo, Quick and Pavelec getting minor snubs given their play this season. Five of the six who were named to the team are from the Eastern Conference, which is generally considered to be weaker than the West.
Not listed but on the all-star team (fewer than 20 points): Zdeno Chara, Marc Staal
Now a pile of points does not always an all-star make, but you'll note all of the deserving candidates who didn't make the team. Visnovsky, Johnson, Liles and Yandle are all having strong seasons.
Not listed but on the all-star team (fewer than 30 points): Ales Hemsky
Fourteen of the top 15 scorers make the team, with the remaining 10 players sprinkled between 24 and 37 points. Hemsky has missed a lot of the season, so it makes sense that he's under the 30-point mark, but how nice would it have been to see Teemu Selanne make the team given the year he's had?
And you'll note there are three Leafs ahead of Kesel on the list.
