Canada's Josh Cassidy has claimed the first major victory of his career, winning the men's wheelchair race at the London Marathon on Sunday.

Cassidy covered the 42.195-kilometre course in one hour 35 minutes 21 seconds. He finished 46 seconds ahead of Switzerland's Marcel Hug.

England's David Weir was attempting to win his fifth London title, but suffered a flat tire late in the race to open the door for Cassidy. He finished third.

Cassidy and Weir spent three weeks training together ahead of the marathon.

"It was a tough race ... but I was confident going in, knowing the training and preparation I had done," said Cassidy. "Right now, I am just delighted to be able to establish myself as one of the top guys (in the sport)."

The Ottawa native competes at a variety of distances and represented Canada at the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing.
