Kelsey Serwa is going to worry about what she controls.
The native of Kelowna, B.C., finished second to Sweden's Anna Holmlund in a women's ski cross Sunday at a freestyle World Cup event. With the win, Holmlund moved atop the overall standings with 572 points, just five points ahead of German Heidi Zacher and 42 in front of Serwa.
So heading into next weekend's final event of the season Serwa still has an outside shot at finishing first overall, but would need both Holmlund and Zacher to falter somewhat.
"I'm just going to go out there and stay focused on myself," she said during a conference call afterwards. "The most I can do is win the race and that would be great, I'd be happy with it at that.
"In the end whoever is best is going to win it, it's not luck by any means and I'm not hoping for any luck. I'm a good competitor and they're great competitors as well and whoever deserves it will get it."
Norway's Marte Hoeie Gjefsen was third in the race.
Canada also secured a silver medal in the men's event as Christopher Del Bosco of Sudbury, Ont., finished behind overall leader Andreas Matt of Austria. Switzerland's Conradign Netzer took third.
Serwa, the circuit's top rookie in 2009, said while ending her campaign on a winning note would be ideal, she's more than happy with the year she's had.
"I still have a long career ahead of myself and I'm not in any rush to be peaking right now," she said. "Of course, a crystal globe (given to the overall champion) would be amazing and I still have an opportunity to do it this year.
"But I mean, I'm going to be in it at least another three or four years so I have a lot of time and I'm still young and eager."
For the third straight year Del Bosco will have to be content to finish second in the overall standings regardless of what he does next weekend. Still, considering he began the season coming off knee surgery Del Bosco said he's satisfied with his year.
"I've given myself a shot pretty much every race and down the stretch I've been in the final," he said. "There's not much more you could ask for.
"In the end I always like to win but I've been really consistent and any time you make the final you're skiing well ski well but definitely I'd like to finish it out with a win."
