Sun Yating scored three times and Liu Ping and Sun Yujun each added two of their own Monday as the host Chinese downed Canada 9-7 in quarter-final play at the women's world water polo championships.

Wang Yi and Ma Huanhuan had the other goals for China, which will play Russia in the semifinals.

Calgary's Emily Csikos had a hat trick for Canada, while Joelle Bekhazi of Pointe-Claire, Que., and Montreal's Dominique Perreault each added a pair.

China led 3-2 after the first quarter, 5-3 at halftime and 8-7 after three.

"We made too many mistakes on the defensive end of the pool and China being a good team made us pay for them,"Canada coach Patrick Oaten said. "It was a tight game right to the last minute and unfortunately we came up a little short tonight."

Canada, silver medallists in 2009, now facees the defending champions from the U.S. in the tournament's relegation round.

The Americans lost 9-7 to Russia in another quarter-final, while the Olympic gold medallists from the Netherlands fell 12-10 to Greece.

Italy defeated Australia 14-12 in a penalty shootout in the other quarter-final.

Italy and Australia were tied 8-8 in regular time and 9-9 after extra time. In the shootout, Italian goalkeeper blocked Glencora Ralph's attempt and Teresa Frassinetti scored the winner.

Greece will take on Italy in the other semi-final, while the Netherlands faces Australia in the other relegation game.

The Canadian men play a consolation quarter-final on Tuesday against Romania.
