Racer driver Josef Newgarden survived getting speared by his teammate to cruise to victory Sunday in the Firestone IndyLights open-wheel series race in Edmonton.

The 20-year-old from Tennessee took the checkered flag more than 14 seconds ahead of English driver Stefan Wilson; Ireland's Peter Dempsey was third.

Newgarden was on pole but was passed by Esteban Guerrieri, his teammate with Sam Schmidt Motorsports, eight laps into the 40-lap race on the 13-turn, 2.2-mile circuit at the City Centre Airport.

Guerrieri dove inside on a hairpin and hit Newgarden's left sidepod, knocking him back.

It proved to be a fatal move, however, as Guerrieri damaged his front wing and had to pit to replace it 12 laps later to finish 14th.

David Ostella of Maple, Ont., was the top Canadian, finishing eighth in the 16-car grid.
