Canada's downhill mountain bikers thrilled a hometown crowd on Sunday, winning gold and silver at the UCI Mountain Bike & Trials World Championships in Mont-Sainte-Anne.
Lauren Rosser of Squamish, B.C., became the first Canadian to be crowned world champion in junior women's downhill competition. The Rosser edged out Fanny Lombard and Julie Berteaux, who took silver and bronze.
Steve Smith of Cassidy, B.C., won the silver medal in elite men's competition. The 21-year-old, ranked 12th according to Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) rankings, finished just behind Australian Sam Hill.
In the trials world championships, also held at Mont-Sainte-Anne, John Webster of Mill Bay, B.C., finished seventh out of 31 riders competing on 26-inch tires. He is the first Canadian trials rider to qualify for the finals in the history of the world championships.
