Canada won its first Olympic medal with a bronze medal in the women’s 4 x 100-metre freestyle relay. It’s Canada’s first medal in the event in 40 years.
Additional Canadian rowing hopes rest with
Lindsay Jennerich and Patricia Obee, who are expected to contend for a silver medal in women's lightweight double skulls. The women's eight team is also expected to win a silver medal.
Beach volleyball

Tennis
Team Canada is comprised of four players – two men and two women. Genie Bouchard and Gabriela Dabrowski are teaming up for women's doubles, while
Daniel Nestor and Vasek Pospisil represent Canada on the men's side.
Bouchard defeated Sloane Stephens of the United States 6-3, 6-3 in the women's singles opener to advance to the second round. It was a match that epitomized the best of Bouchard's game, and few signs of the shaky confidence Bouchard can sometimes demonstrate, Gary Mason wrote.
France's Gael Monfils beat Pospisil 6-1, 6-3 in 65 in men's singles action later on Saturday.

The Canadian women's basketball team
downed China 90-68 in preliminary round action. Tamara Tatham scored 20 points and Kim Gaucher collected 10 rebounds for Canada, which plays Serbia on Monday. Globe columnist Cathal Kelly was on site for the win, and had this report.
