Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina and Andy Murray of Britain played a marathon match of more than four hours before Murray claimed gold in the men's tennis final. Kei Nishikori won bronze by defeating Rafael Nadal of Spain, 2-1, earlier in the day.
Diving
In the women's 3-metre springboard diving final, Canada's Jennifer Abel and Pamela Ware were medal contenders, but finished off the podium.
Abel was fourth, just shy of the bronze medal.
Basketball
The Canadian women's basketball team lost 73-60 to Spain in its final preliminary-round game.

Ariane Fortin lost in her Olympic debut to Dariga Shakimova of Kazakhstan in women's middleweight competition. The former amateur world champion from Montreal was coming off a bronze medal at the 2015 Pan Am Games.
In men's action, Toronto's Arthur Biyarslanov lost to Germany's Artem Harutyunyan in a light-welterweight round of 16 bout.
Beach volleyball
Canada's Sarah Pavan and Heather Bansley
were eliminated after dropping a 2-0 decision to Germany's Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst. The Canadian duo defeated the other Canadian team, Victoria's Jamie Broder and Toronto's Kristina Valjas, earlier in the Rio Games.
All Canadian beach volleyball teams, men's and women's, have now been eliminated in Rio.
