While Italy didn’t make it to this World Cup, co-host Canada brought some Italian style to the tournament.
The Canadian team wore Montreal-made Samuelsohn suits made of fabric supplied by Reda 1865, a renowned mill based in Biella, Italy.
The bespoke suits, which players wore when they landed at Toronto’s Billy Bishop Airport ahead of their June 12 opener against Bosnia-Herzegovina, featured dark charcoal, double-breasted jackets.
“We really wanted the team to get off the plane with tremendous confidence and look powerful,” Aliya Morehead, Samuelsohn’s chief creative officer, said in an interview.

Comfort was also a necessity.
“If they don’t feel comfortable in it, you can tell. And you can see it,” Morehead said.
So they opted for a Flexo fabric with a breathable hopsack weave, light in construction with a bit of stretch.
“Our job wasn’t to make the athletes for the suit. It was to make the suit fit the athletes,” said Florence Lacour, Samuelsohn’s marketing director.
Canadian fullback Richie Laryea says the suit got a thumbs-up from his wife Melanie Pace, who is a stylist.
“She liked them … so we’re good,” he said.
Goalkeeper Owen Goodman also approved.
“They look cool,” he said.

The made-to-measure suit sells for $2,300 at select Harry Rosen stores. They are also available through the Samuelsohn website as a “made-to-order” offering, which offers less customization, for $2,050.
The suits came with a custom lining featuring soccer balls and the Maple Leaf, as well as a custom lapel pin.
Samuelsohn, which was founded in 1923, was designated as “official fine clothing outfitter” to the Canadian men’s team. Beginning next year, Samuelsohn will also outfit the Canadian women’s team.
