Oct 24th 2009: New York Red Bulls 5-0 Toronto FC

It was not just the score line it was the performance at a time when TFC had everything to play for while New York were ready for the beach. The reality is when you encounter this kind of circumstance you have a major problem beyond talent and ability. You have a character problem.

The only way to deal with this is by making tough decisions. TFC sending home Ali Gerba from training camp is a good sign of things to come. While they look thin in terms of ability they are seemingly creating a new culture. The key now will be who they bring in to replace the departures.

There is no doubt they will encounter some growing pains in the short term but today's announcement indicates a real change of direction and sets a standard of acceptable performance. Ali obviously does not meet the minimum standard and so he now faces the consequences.

Maybe he will be back with the team but don't hold your breath on it. Leopards do not change their spots and what you see is what you get with Ali Gerba. It is the advantage of having the MLS in Canada. There is nowhere to hide for Canadian players who just do not meet the standards be it technical, tactical or mental. The standard and demands from all areas including the fans are too great.

It should also be noted that playing for our national program in non World Cup tournaments and exhibition games is not always the right environment to judge the overall ability and talent of our players.
