This Oct. 31, 2010, file photo shows Washington Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb on from the sidelines after being benched during the fourth quarter of an NFL football game against the Detroit Lions, in Detroit. With the game on the line against the Lions, Mike Shanahan decided McNabb wasn't competent enough to stay on the field. The coach made a stunner of a move, yanking his offensive captain from the game and inserting Rex Grossman, a decision that has ramifications for the rest of the season and into 2011. Controversy in the capital

Bye weeks aren't always a good thing in the NFL. Case in point: the Washington Redskins. The team has had to suffer through two controversial-filled weeks following a loss in Detroit in which head coach Mike Shanahan benched starting quarterback Donovan McNabb with less than two minutes left in the game. Shanahan first said McNabb didn't know the playbook, then he questioned the pivot's fitness. On Monday, the Redskins face McNabb's former team, the Philadelphia Eagles, with tension still swirling.

Captain Canada heads south

It's hardly a surprise that the Miami Heat continue to dominate the spotlight in the NBA. The league's focus has been on South Beach since the summer formation of the Big Three. It is also not shocking that the star-laden squad is taking its fair share of lumps while learning to play together, but only the biggest cynics would have predicted that the Heat would start the season with a mediocre six wins in its first 10 games. A weak spot has been at point guard. The Phoenix Suns, who visit Wednesday, haven't had that problem in recent years, with Steve Nash running the floor.

Who will be Vanier bound?

The Mitchell Bowl will be an intriguing matchup between the Canada West champion Calgary Dinos and the Atlantic-winning St. Mary's Huskies. However, the Uteck Bowl, the other national semi-final, will be marquee showdown. The eight-time defending Quebec champion and No. 1-ranked Laval Rouge et Or remain on track to play in the Vanier Cup on home turf on Nov. 27. They'll face the No. 2 Western Mustangs, the Ontario champion. The Rouge et Or are a perfect 5-0 in the Vanier Cup, and their last title came in 2008 when they beat Western 44-21 to secure their fifth national title.

Legends meet

The main event of UFC 123 is an intriguing light heavyweight meeting between Quinton Jackson and Lyoto Machida, a pair of former champions angling for another title shot. The semi main event may steal the show, however. UFC Hall of Fame member Matt Hughes, a two-time welterweight champion, is hoping to thrust himself back into the title picture and silence the talk that he should retire. Hughes, 37, meets long-time rival B.J. Penn, also a former champion. Penn is leaving the lightweight division for a third meeting with Hughes. The pair have split a pair of previous fights.
