Steam is an online store that offers instant gratification for computer gamers. Instead of driving to the local electronics store to pick up a video game, you can just click to download games directly to your PC or Mac computer.
Steam membership is free. Members can browse through the games library, then click to buy, download and start playing games right away. Members also get access to the Steam community, where they can socialize with other players and host matches with other members.
Game gifting is easy. To give a game to a friend or family member, all you need is the recipient's email address. Just find the game you want on the Steam Storefront then click the "Add to cart" button. To give the game away, select "Purchase as a gift" during checkout. You can "gift" a game even if the recipient does not have a Steam account.
After you send the gift, your friend will receive an e-mail message, including your personalized gift message, notifying them that they have received a gift. If your friend is already a Steam member, they will also receive a gift message in the Steam application. Be sure that you have the correct email address for your gamer friend before you place the order. If the gift is not a surprise, Steam recommend that you verify the address with the person to ensure that they receive the gift promptly.
Steam offers games from more than two dozen publishers, including Activision, Atari, Electronic Arts, Epic Games, etc. The library of Mac games is smaller but is growing steadily.
If your budget is limited, note that Steam offers more than 700 PC games for under $10. Steam is also known for its occasional surprise sales and multi-game "bundle" offers of great games at discount prices.
Gamers on a budget might also want to explore Good Old Games (GOG.com), an online game store that sells updated versions of old computer games at bargain prices.
Note that a Steam gift purchase is a one-time transfer - after the recipient has activated and installed the game, it is a non-refundable game in his or her Steam games collection. Also note that you may only gift new purchases - you may not transfer games you already own.
