President-elect Donald Trump has defeated vice-president Kamala Harris in the 2024 U.S. presidential election. His running mate, Ohio senator JD Vance, will become the next vice-president.

On election night, a Republican victory in Wisconsin tipped the balance in Mr. Trump's favour, who also took Pennsylvania, Georgia and North Carolina, swing states where Ms. Harris and the Democrats had hoped to prevail.

In the same election, his Republican Party secured a majority in the Senate and may even win the House of Representatives, which would make it easier for the president to legislate his policies and push through key appointments.
