The Online News Act (Bill C-18)
Bill C-18, or the Online News Act, is legislation that forces tech companies such as Google to strike deals with news organizations for posting or linking their content. The bill became law in June, 2023, and took effect in December, 2023. As a result of the legislation, Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, began blocking news on its platforms in Canada in August, 2024.
