Epstein controversy is an American kaleidoscope of fraught but central issues

Why, at a time of fervid political debate, and in an age when fundamental government principles are being contested, has American civic life suddenly become dominated by a political convulsion over a sexual predator long dead?

On the surface, the notion that consequential struggles over tariffs and taxes, long-time international friendships, military alliances, and the survival of broad democratic values could be shelved in favour of a bitter fight over the convicted sex predator Jeffrey Epstein, who died in 2019, defies the laws and logic of politics.

But this is an era when long-established political conventions and logic itself are upended, and in this context the Epstein controversy is completely congruent with the times.

Despite all its surface irrationality − intermingled with deadly serious questions about sexual abuse − this matter is about foundational issues in American life. As such, an episode that might otherwise be considered peripheral has suddenly become central − and, coming at the intersection of power and affluence, revelatory about signature matters of the age.

Are there separate standards for the rich and the poor? For those who possess influence and those who do not? For those whose paths through life are lit with privilege and promise and those whose byways are strewn with obstacles and impediments?

These are the concerns around which much of the Trump ascendancy − a movement that has changed the optics of all of American politics − has rotated.

And so, while a microscope is required to see the world in its granular detail, and a telescope is needed to glimpse the sprawling size of the universe, it is a kaleidoscope that is necessary to understand the Jeffrey Epstein contretemps in the United States.

The moving coloured shards of glass in the public kaleidoscope that are determining the colliding passions of this political moment are the various players in this confounding drama. The changing angles in the viewfinder stand for the shifting perspectives of the principals in this episode. The mirrors inside reflect the conflicting elements of American public life that this conflict reveals.

The questions about the death of Mr. Epstein, the contents of any documents the Justice Department possesses, the revelations in sealed grand-jury testimony, the presence of Donald Trump in a bound volume of Epstein birthday salutes, and the possible role of Mr. Trump in any Epstein activities − these are the moving parts of the Epstein kaleidoscope.

And like images in a kaleidoscope, the view of this episode changes, depending on the observer, on the turn of events, on the light that’s shined from the outside environment.

The biggest outside factor is an Epstein insider, Ghis­laine Max­well, sen­tenced to 20 years in prison for trafficking underage girls for sex. Last week, in a low-security federal corrections facility in Tallahassee, she emerged as the one-woman Ultra operation with the potential of single-handedly breaking the Epstein Enigma Code.

Ms. Maxwell could determine whether the Trump administration moves past this episode, or whether the President’s onetime allies are further inflamed by apparent evidence that a cadre of plutocrats engaging in child abuse in exclusive venues or on private aircraft are living above the law.

The result is an unanticipated congruence of interest in two otherwise disparate and contending factions in contemporary American politics: conservative insurgents and progressives, with no intersection of policy positions, and yet converging on the notion that no one is above the law.

Until now, that concern was the exclusive province of liberals regarding the President’s aggressiveness in shuttering agencies, dismissing federal employees, unilaterally imposing tariffs and ordering deportations as unlawful extensions of power. Now, the new brand of muscular conservatives − the vanguard that propelled Mr. Trump’s movement − are asserting the primacy of equal application of standards.

Thus, Mr. Epstein − involved in transactions concerning millions with Victoria’s Secret and Limited entrepreneur Leslie Wexner and hedge-fund mandarin Leon Black − is the central figure in a textbook example of high living and low risk that is incompatible with the lifestyles of MAGA activists and with the political precepts of some liberals.

For all of them, the stakes are high.

“This conspiracy involves all of the greatest hits for the Trump base: an evil cabal of liberals running a secret ring of pedophiles that could only be stopped by the heroic efforts of Trump himself,” said Geoff Dancy, a University of Toronto political scientist who has studied conspiracies.

He said the Trump base is “very much expecting to see the Epstein files, and will be hugely disappointed and resentful if those files never materialize. It could be one of the most profound emperor-wears-no-clothes moments Trump has faced to date.”

Mr. Trump is in danger of vast parts of his movement turning against him, depending on the nature of the relationship with Mr. Epstein that is revealed by Ms. Maxwell or grand-jury testimony. Republicans are in peril of giving harbour to plutocrats in blatant reinforcement of the image as a party of the wealthy that it has been at pains to shed.

Democrats, luxuriating in a crisis that has overwhelmed their partisan rivals, are vulnerable to overplaying a tactical hand while ignoring the more fundamental crisis enveloping a party that is at its lowest ebb in a generation. A Wall Street Journal poll over the weekend showed that nearly two out of three voters hold an unfavourable view of the Democrats.

Even so, the Democrats are pressing on, planning advertisements in conservative media outlets in a dozen House of Representative districts where Republicans are seeking re-election. One of them has a digital overlay bellowing: “Call your representative. Demand they release the Epstein files.”

It’s the first time that Democrats and MAGA forces have projected the same message.
