Aisling Murphy is the theatre reporter and critic for The Globe and Mail.

Before joining The Globe in 2025, she spent four years as the senior editor of Intermission Magazine. While there, she also completed consecutive newsroom stints at the Toronto Star and CP24, where she wrote breaking news and entertainment stories.

Aisling is a two-time winner and three-time runner-up for the Nathan Cohen Awards for Excellence in Critical Writing. While at CP24, she reported extensively on Kenneth Law, earning a team RTDNA nomination for outstanding continuing coverage. CP24’s coverage of the 2023 mayoral election in Toronto additionally earned Murphy and her team an RTDNA award for outstanding special events coverage.

As a freelancer, Murphy has written extensively about Canadian theatre and pop culture, building on the Taylor Swift beat she helped create at the Toronto Star while chronicling theatre across the country. Her freelance bylines include The New York Times, CBC Arts and her hometown paper, the Baltimore Sun.

She is co-chair of the Toronto Theatre Critics' Awards and a board member for the Canadian Theatre Critics Association.

Why did you become a journalist?

Theatre journalism is a crucial means of archival in an industry which, by its very definition, is ephemeral. As a student, I wanted to help document the work I was seeing in Ottawa, and I loved being able to put productions in dialogue with each other. Six years after becoming a theatre critic, I still love reviewing plays, but I’ve also grown fond of writing more analytical features about trends in Canadian theatre.
