Bernadette began her career in 1986 as a freelance lifestyle writer for The Canadian Press. She joined The Toronto Star in 1988 as a fashion writer, and was promoted to fashion editor in 1993. Bernadette left The Star in 2008 to create a website for jewellery lovers, which she ran for one year before joining FASHION magazine in 2009 as editor-in-chief. She remained there until 2016, when she left to become a freelance contributor to The Globe and Mail and several Canadian magazines, and take on consulting projects for luxury fashion and retail brands. She returned to FASHION magazine as Editor-in-Chief in August of 2019 and in 2020, led the transformation of FASHION from a traditional women’s magazine to a brand for all ages, genders, ethnicities, sizes and orientations. She left the magazine in 2024.

In addition to her media career, Bernadette is an advocate for people with autism and intellectual disabilities. She has fundraised for the National Ballet of Canada, the Toronto Public Library, and the Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research. Bernadette also enjoys playing mahjong and has an ongoing struggle to improve her bridge game.

Why did you become a journalist?

I love telling other people's stories. I get enormous satisfaction from bringing obscure talents to a wider audience, and supporting indie designers and retailers. I enjoy writing about how changing styles and consumption habits at the luxury level signal societal shifts. And I find the world of fine jewellery endlessly fascinating – from its technical challenges to its investment value to the profound meaning it can have to a wearer.
