Clashes in Ethiopia kill 20 Muslim worshippers: regional Islamic leader
(FILES) In this file photo taken on December 14, 2016, Peacekeeper troops from Ethiopia and deployed in the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) patrol outside Abyei town, in Abyei state. - More than 500 UN peacekeepers from war-torn Tigray have refused to return to Ethiopia, citing fears for their safety and highlighting deepening fissures in the East African country as they request political asylum in Sudan. Until last year, Ethiopian forces accounted for the vast majority of the around 4,000-member peacekeeping mission in Abyei (UNISFA), a disputed border region between Sudan and South Sudan. The Ethiopian contingent was replaced by a multinational force on Sudan's request, as relations between Addis Ababa and Khartoum deteriorate over a territorial dispute and Ethiopia's mega-dam on the Blue Nile, which Sudan fears will threaten its access to water. Most of the Ethiopian forces have returned home, but some have now requested asylum, a UN peacekeeping spokesperson told AFP in New York in April 2022.
