Roger Bull, Head of the museum's National Biodiversity Cryobank - photographed here topping up one of the Cryobank's freezers with liquid nitrogen coolant. The coolant ensures the freezers remain at -170C the optimal temperature to ensure molecules such as DNA retain their integrity and can be preserved long-term for study. NOTE: I did a liquid nitrogen top-up at the start of the lockdown to put the freezers in their most robust state. There is likely no need to do this again given that the Fusion freezers continuously re-condense the liquid nitrogen, which is perfect for guaranteeing proper cryogenic storage temperatures during the lockdown. He visits the freezers once a week to ensure that all of the Cryobank freezers are running smoothly.
