SEC Approves HOOD-Linked KPI Contracts: A New Growth Avenue Unlocked?

SEC Approves HOOD-Linked KPI Contracts: A New Growth Avenue Unlocked?

Robinhood Markets, Inc.HOOD is expected to gain a new revenue growth opportunity after the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) approved Cboe Global Markets, Inc.’s CBOE proposal on Oct. 13 to list binary options tied to company-specific key performance indicators (KPIs). Robinhood will likely become the first retail brokerage to offer such contracts, potentially broadening its event-driven trading offerings and creating an additional source of transaction-based revenues.

The contracts will cover more than 100 metrics across 23 companies, including NVIDIA’s data-center revenues, Apple's iPhone revenues and Robinhood's funded-customer count. The offering would let customers trade on specific corporate performance indicators, expanding the range of event-driven products on HOOD's platform.

The proposed KPI contracts are likely to attract retail investors seeking to trade on corporate performance rather than solely on conventional asset-price movements. By extending its product lineup to company-specific business metrics, Robinhood is expected to expand its reach to customers interested in tracking developments across technology and other corporate sectors.

The initiative aligns with HOOD's broader strategy of expanding its active-trading ecosystem through options, futures, prediction markets and other event-driven products. Transaction-based revenues recorded a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 57.7% over the six years ended 2025, primarily driven by options and equities trading. The prediction markets business is also gaining traction, with cumulative volumes exceeding 45 billion contracts since launch. The addition of KPI-linked contracts is expected to provide another avenue to engage active traders and encourage activity across the platform.

If customer adoption builds, the offering will likely complement Robinhood's existing trading products and support further transaction-revenue growth. However, its contribution will depend on trading volumes, customer demand and the company's ability to monetize the contracts over time.

HOOD Faces Near-Term Regulatory and Monetization Hurdles

Trading has not yet started despite the SEC's approval, as separate clearing approvals remain pending. The launch timeline and completion of the remaining operational requirements will therefore determine when Robinhood can begin offering the contracts.

Additionally, Robinhood and Cboe plan to waive fees through the end of 2026, limiting immediate monetization. Although the fee waiver is expected to encourage initial participation, the offering's longer-term revenue contribution will depend on sustained trading activity and customers' willingness to continue trading once fees are introduced.

Regulatory uncertainty presents another consideration. Robinhood's expansion into prediction markets has already exposed the business to state-level challenges over whether certain event contracts should be treated as gambling or federally regulated derivatives. Although the newly approved KPI contracts are distinct from sports-event contracts, broader scrutiny of event-driven products could increase compliance requirements or complicate future expansion.

Our Take on HOOD’s New Revenue Growth Source

The SEC's approval provides Robinhood with another opportunity to broaden its active-trading ecosystem and diversify transaction-based revenue. Given the company's existing momentum in options, equities and prediction markets, KPI-linked contracts are likely to complement its product expansion strategy and attract customers interested in trading on corporate performance.

However, the opportunity remains at an early stage, with trading yet to begin. Regulatory developments and customer adoption will also influence the product's commercial potential. HOOD's ability to turn this into a meaningful growth driver will depend on a successful launch, sustained trading volumes and monetization after the promotional period ends.

Over the past year, shares of Robinhood have declined 24.6% against the industry’s 7.3% gain.

Similar Expansion Efforts by Robinhood’s Peers

Coinbase GlobalCOIN is expanding its stablecoin and trading businesses through strategic partnerships. On Oct. 8, the company announced a partnership with Samsung to integrate USDC into Samsung Wallet for U.S. users, with launch expected in late October. Coinbase will provide custody infrastructure through Coinbase Prime, alongside licensed infrastructure partner Bastion.

The deal will likely boost USDC adoption through digital payments and cross-border transfers, supporting stablecoin-related revenues through Coinbase's agreement with Circle and creating additional custody and payments opportunities. Coinbase is also extending stablecoin infrastructure to community banks and credit unions through its Moov partnership and expanding its international trading business through regulated derivatives in Canada.

Interactive Brokers GroupIBKR continues to expand its multi-asset trading platform through product innovation, AI integration and broader market access. In May, the company introduced a unified prediction-markets interface, expanded its cryptocurrency offerings and enabled stablecoin transfers to external wallets. It has also integrated AI tools, including Claude, ChatGPT and Grok, to enhance investment research and portfolio analysis.

These initiatives are expected to strengthen client engagement, attract new accounts and increase trading activity, supporting commission-based revenues and interest income from client balances. Expanded cryptocurrency, stablecoin and prediction-market offerings will diversify Interactive Brokers’ revenue growth opportunities, while AI-powered tools may improve client retention and platform usage.
