On Aug. 19, U.S. President Donald Trump is threatening to impose new 50-per-cent tariffs on a range of Canadian goods in an escalation of the trade war against Canada.
There are more than 500 product categories that could be targeted by the new tariffs. The tariffs would cover items directly related to trade irritants, such as provincial boycotts of American alcohol and Canada’s supply-managed dairy system, as well as other seemingly random products.
Meanwhile, Trump has declined to renew the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), upending the future of trade in North America.
