New Brunswick, the ultimate Canadian adventure destination

Filipa Jackson, @filipajackson

Being a travel blogger, you want to visit the wonders of the world. Isn’t it funny you never think to visit your own backyard? Canada has so much natural beauty within its borders, so you’re never too far from nature. With the summer weather finally here, we took advantage of exploring what Canada has to offer.

New Brunswick has been on the list for a while. It’s kind of crazy that we’ve never been before.

STAY

While in New Brunswick, we chose to stay at the Delta Beausejour, located on the main strip of Moncton. It was in the perfect location. From the moment we walked in, we felt at home. The staff were very friendly and attentive, and the rooms were comfy and updated.

Pro tip: If you opt for the club floor rooms, you get access to the lounge, where you can help yourself to breakfast treats and afternoon snacks.

PLAY & CHILL OUT

Hopewell Rocks

Now, this place is a must-see. I was totally blown away. Ever imagine walking on the ocean floor? Well, here you can!

Experience the world’s highest tides, which starts at 0 feet and rise to almost 46 feet throughout the day. Hopewell Rocks is truly a magical place. We arrived at 8 a.m. to walk amongst the 40-to-70-foot-tall rock formations. Then we came back around lunchtime to kayak the Bay of Fundy with Baymount Outdoor Adventures. Make sure to check out the tide scheduled before you go because the times change every day.

We got to travel through the narrow passages flanked by the rock formations, all the while learning about the history of this unique destination. The guides will also tell you the truth behind these tides. Here’s a hint – it has something to do with God and a whale…

Fundy National Park

After only a quick one-hour drive, you’ll reach Fundy National Park. This place is absolutely stunning!

You may not know this – that I’m a professional couch surfer, so my hiking skills aren’t top-notch – and it’s great that there are trails for all levels and, not to mention, the most breathtaking lookout spots. After a day in the park, head over to Alma, a small town, for some eats!

Usva Spa Nordik

After exploring the natural wonders of the area, take some time to relax at the newly opened Usva Spa Nordik. There, on the hills of Moncton, sit back and relax and treat yourself to a massage or – my personal fave – the thermal experience. Take your time moving through the three-step cycle of hot, cold and rest.

There are other options to consider, from saunas and steam rooms to taking a plunge in the outdoor cold pool, relaxing in one of the many seating areas, then ending with a dip in the heated pool.

When you’re all done, head to the bistro lounge to indulge in some delicious treats and eats, all while enjoying the hillside views below.

Magnetic Hill Winery and B&B

Yes, I said winery.

Who knew New Brunswick has the weather conditions to grow grapes for wine? Locally owned and family operated, Magnetic Hill Winery and B&B should not be missed.

Tour the 1867 historic property and taste the wide range of award-winning wines. To set themselves apart from other wineries, Magnetic Hill uses 3/4 to 1 cup of fresh fruit in each and every bottle, and you can surely taste the difference.

My favourite wine, called Illusions, believe it or not, didn’t have any grapes at all! It was made completely from rhubarb.

We even got a sneaky taste right from the tanks of their soon-to-be-released Tipsy Seagull. You guys are going to love this one.

EAT

Clémentine Café–Deli

Back in Moncton, we visited this breakfast hot spot. Their delicious freshly ground coffee alongside breakfast sandwiches made for a perfect light breakfast. Did I mention they have some pretty awesome Montreal-style bagels? Mmm!

Tide & Boar Gastropub

Around the corner from our hotel is Tide & Boar Gastropub – a great spot to sit underneath twinkly lights while enjoying some good wholesome barbecued food and a refreshing pint of beer crafted on-site.

Tipsy Tails Bar & Grill

Did someone say lobster? Well then, you’ve got to try one of the region’s most exciting industries. Lobster and Atlantic Canada go hand in hand.

It has been a part of their lifestyle for so many generations. Tipsy Tails, in the town of Alma, has its own take on many lobster-inspired dishes – lobster poutine, lobster mac ’n’ cheese and the ever-popular lobster roll. We tucked into some lobster rolls and our bellies couldn’t be more pleased.

An Octopus’s Garden Café

Before setting out on your hike, stop by the town of Alma for breakfast at An Octopus’s Garden Café, where the locally sourced and homegrown produce make for a delicious, fresh start to your day.

From the food to nature and the happy smiling locals, New Brunswick completely exceeded our expectations.

So, whether you are a Canadian like me or from some other part of the world, make sure the next time you decide to visit the Maritimes, New Brunswick is on the top of your list.
