Marcus Yam

Marcus Yam is an international visual correspondent for The Globe and Mail. A Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist, his work focuses on conflict, displacement and the human consequences of war.

Before joining The Globe and Mail, he spent more than a decade at the Los Angeles Times reporting across the United States and abroad. His work has documented the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and the enduring impact of war on civilian life in some of the world’s most volatile regions.

Yam received the 2022 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography for his coverage of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan while working for the Los Angeles Times. He is a two-time recipient of the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Journalism Award, including in 2019 for his portrayal of the everyday lives of Gazans. In 2023, he received the Overseas Press Club’s Robert Capa Gold Medal for his coverage of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

He was also part of Pulitzer Prize-winning breaking news teams for coverage of the San Bernardino, Calif., terrorist attack in 2015 at the Los Angeles Times and the Oso, Wash., landslide in 2014 at The Seattle Times.

Most recently, he was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University, where he examined global conflict and the idea that journalism is an act of shared humanity.
