The action

This four-bedroom house became too small for the owners’ family less than two years after they bought it for $585,000. Choosing that same amount, minus $100, as their asking price this summer, enticed 10 buyers comfortable with the quirks of owning an older home such as this one, built in 1922. The sellers arranged a $580,000 deal with one buyer within three weeks.

“Westmount is one of the few areas [in Edmonton] with these 100-year-old houses, and what has sold there in the past two years has averaged about 45 days,” said agent Clare Packer.

“The sellers were happy to get what they got for it, and they can move along to the next property.”

The lack of homes like this one a few kilometres west of Edmonton’s core, which combines traditional and modern components, likely fuelled the rapid sale.

“There are still some areas where buyers are buying the story, history and charm [of a home],” said Ms. Packer.

“It has original hardwood flooring, plaster walls and staircase. The layout had been largely preserved, but it had some modernizations, like the bathrooms and kitchen.”

What they got

This house has 1,990 square feet of living space across three levels, plus an unfinished basement.

There is a living room with a wood-burning fireplace, a dining area and a kitchen with stainless-steel countertops, tiled backsplashes and an exit to a deck, patio and yard.

There are three bathrooms, as well as open-concept dens on the second and third levels.

The garage faces a laneway behind the 25- by 140-foot lot.

“It’s well located to 124th Street, which is a vibrant street in Edmonton, and well located to the river valley and downtown,” Ms. Packer said.

“You’ve also got really large, mature trees, creating a canopy on a lot of streets.”
