He began his journalism career in Wakefield, Que., at the Low Down to Hull and Back News, where he won a Quebec Community Newspaper Association Award for a story about an early-morning rescue of a loon stranded in the middle of a local lake. He then moved to the Ottawa Citizen, where he was the deputy editorial pages editor, and wrote a column about local affairs and provincial justice issues, before joining the National Post as its Alberta correspondent. He joined The Globe and Mail in 2025.
Tyler is the author of The Republic of Alberta: An Idea That Won't Go Away, a history and analysis of the Alberta separatist movement. He is based in Edmonton.
